A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.

Beaune to Barcelona by bike

Since I was enjoying the recumbent so much I decided that cycling to Spain would be a good idea. I didn't have time to cycle all the way from England and so started at Beaune, just south of Dijon, in France. For two reasons: It was just over 1000km so I could do it in two weeks, and European Bike Express could take me and the bike there.

Stats: 74km, avg 13.7km/hr, max 65km/hr, 5.5hrs riding though 9hrs of journey time! It was hilly and the computer only measures time when you're turning the pedals, not resting under a tree trying to get your breath back, or eating lunch for instance. Nonetheless it's difficult to imagine how I spent 3.5 hours not pedalling - OK lunch and asking directions might be an hour and half or even two hours but where did the rest go? Did I really just stop and rest for an hour and a half in total?

8.00am I'd met a cyclist just coming onto the main road and we'd chatted for a bit as we rode: he was curious about the bike, but he also showed me the right road, the D13 that I needed to turn off on. As has often been the case it's perfect tarmac, few cars and easy riding, at least easy to begin with.

8.24, my life it was nice riding on the flat for a while, down towards Allègre and St Paulien. I stopped for breakfast in St Paulien and was reminded by a passerby that Allègre is home to a recumbent festival, I remember reading about it Velovision.

9.37, the first of the Puy's, towns built on plugs of rock that rise above the plain.
